Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo wants the Inspector General of Police designate Hilary Mutyambai to ensure there is an end to the importation of Ugandan Waragi in Kenya.
Waragi is a type of alcohol (gin).
Speaking to Hot News, Elisha said there are many businessmen in Kenya who are importing Waragi from Uganda and evading paying tax.
He said Waragi has killed many young people in Gem constituency.
“Let him ensure that waragi is eliminated completely. Many young people consume excess Waragi and it renders them useless-they are unable to attend to their daily chores. It has also killed the local businesses since it’s cheap,” he said.
On Tuesday, the Joint Committee on Administration and National Security of the National Assembly and Defense and Foreign Relations of the Senate approved the nomination of Hilary Nzioka Mutyambai as Inspector General of the National Police Service.
In a report tabled in Parliament and approved by MPs- the legislatures praised Mutyambai saying he demonstrated vast experience in policing, security, intelligence and investigation during his vetting.
Mutyambai will be sworn in any time as the IG.
He will replace Joseph Boinet who was named tourism Cabinet Administrative Secretary (CAS).
Elisha asked Mutyambai to ensure there is a balance in the distribution of police officers.
He said there are areas which have many police officers and others not.
The Gem MP added that in his constituency, there are many police officers were transferred but have not been replaced to date thus overstretching the few who are there.
“The new IG is coming in when his table is full and he has a lot to learn from his predecessor. He needs to focus on investigations and revamp the forensic lab so that we have officers who have competency in terms of investigating violence against women, cattle rustling and house raids,” he said.
The MP said that Mutyambai should encourage police officer to go to school and ensure he promotes them.
“Boinet was forthright-honest and when I called him, he was readily available for assistance” Odhiambo said.
Odhiambo said there must be a correlation between Mutyambais profile and his performance.
“I want to ask him that it’s prudent he takes time and does an audit of the police needs in this country. We have many competent officers in this country but we also have police officers who have been treated so badly that they have lost hope in the service,” he said.
Odhiambo added that Mutyambai should come up with a scheme of service to motivate police officers to increase the level of productivity.
