Inmates at Taveta GK prison are determined to scale the heights in creativity by crafting multipurpose wood items, Assistant Commissioner of prisons Benson Mbogori has said.
Mbogori is in- charge of the correction center.
He said the prisoners at the facility are talented and will use the skills learnt to better their lives once released.
“No one should come out of this place and go back and commit crime. It is an opportunity to be self-reliant for the ex-convicts.” Mbogori said.
He spoke on Thursday at the prison’s industry department where he said the inmates have invented a wooden chair that also serves as a ladder.
Mbogori was accompanied by deputy Chief Inspector of prisons Paul Kaburu.
Kaburu thanked the officers in charge at the industry department for their efforts and determination.
“I thank both my colleagues and the inmates for making us proud.” Kaburu said.
Kaburu emphasized the need for the inmates and staff to observe Covid-19 protocols.
The prison has 133 inmates and is near the Kenya-Tanzania border.
Mbogori thanked the Commissioner General of Prisons Wycliffe Ogallo as well as the Coast regional prisons boss Hassan Bugu for their support in prison reforms.
He appealed to the community to embrace the inmates once they are released to make them feel loved.
“These young men will have reformed by the time they step out of this prison,” Mbogori told Hot News.
