Busia County has embarked on mass vaccination off all animals in the County.
This is after an outbreak of Anthrax in the outskirts of Kisumu Town that left one person dead.
While launching the exercise at Burumba Dispensary in Matayos Sub County on Wednesday, County Director Veterinary services Dr Allan Ogendo said anthrax can be very fatal if people eat animals that have died from the disease.
One person who died in Nyamasari area in the outskirts of Kisumu was suspected to have eaten a cow believed to have been infected with anthrax.
Anthrax symptoms include body weakness and pains, fever and wounds.
“Anthrax is a zoonotic disease that can affect human beings; we are being proactive because we are neighboring Kisumu, so we never know when it can hit us,” he said.
Dr Ogendo said that their main aim is to be proactive so that they can provide preventive medicine in order to contain outbreaks of such diseases in future.
He said that vaccination against anthrax is done at a cost of sh30 per animal, black quarter (Sh30) and Rabies (Sh100) which have been subsidized by the county government.
He said vaccination will be done in all the seven sub counties in the county.
“ I urge farmers to visit sub county veterinary offices for more information about various vaccination services,” he said.
