Busia County will spend Sh157 million on maintenance of 31 roads across the county from fuel levy funds.
Busia Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi has said.
Speaking during the launch of the maintenance exercise at Namonye in Bunyala North Ward, Mulomi said Bunyala, Samia, Matayos and Nambale sub counties will benefit from four roads each with Butula, Teso North and Teso South benefiting from five roads each.
Mulomi told 31 contractors who will undertake the exercise that there will be no payment for shoddy work, adding that each contract should be done according to the bills of quantity.
“ The engineers should also ensure contractors execute their work diligently saying taxpayers money should not go to pay creditors who have not lived up to their expectations,” he said.
The deputy governor assured Public Works, Roads, Transport and Energy Executive Okwara Ekirapa that he will move around with him to inspect the projects, asking engineers to support the CECM to have quality work.
He urged contractors to embrace labor-based approach where professionalism is not required and to pay casuals good wages.
Bunyala MCAs Bartholomew Were, Fredrick Musirimba, Felix Omanyi and Casper Ajuma said outsourcing of casual laborers will not be tolerated.
They added that they want their people to benefit from the fuel levy funds.
County Engineer Paul Atelu said the scope of work will include publicity boards for easy identification of a contractor in case of uproar from the public.
The exercise will also entail bush clearing, excavation, grading, cross culverts and gravelling among others.
