Political tension in Kajiado County heightened on Thursday evening after political allies of Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko sought to oppose Governor Joseph Ole Lenku’s elevation as the Maasai land BBI coordinator.
The Tobiko team allies which are led by her sister Peris Tobiko , Kajiado Central MP Memusi Kanchori, former Governor David Nkedianye, former Senator Peter Mositet and Ol Kejuado county council chairman Tarayia Ole Kores met today at a Nairobi hotel to plot a petition that Mr Tobiko be made the BBI Kingpin in the region in place of Mr Lenku.
The Tobiko brigade which has been critical of Governor Lenku and is largely composed of ODM Members who lost seats in the last election are said to propel Mr Tobiko to the BBI bandwagon and be their candidate for governorship in 2022.
An earlier attempt by the team on Monday to lobby former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to have Mr Tobiko spearhead the BBI team, failed after Mr Odinga said Mr Lenku, being a Jubilee Governor, was President Kenyatta’s choice.
Paradoxically, the Tobiko team met at the same time Governor Lenku was meeting a team of leaders from Kajiado, Narok and Samburu counties to strategize on marketing BBI in Maaland.
HOT NEWS has reliably confirmed the meeting at Serena Hotel in Nairobi was chaired by Mr Lenku and was attended by Narok Governor Samuel Tunai and his Samburu Counterpart Moses Kasaine and several MPs.
In a post on his facebook page this evening, Lenku said.
“In proud support of BBI and in preparation for this weekend’s events where we will be sharing the benefits of BBI with those in the coast and across the nation, I have spent today meeting with the key leadership of the Maa and Samburu communities, including Narok Governor HE Ole Tunai and Samburu Governor HE Kasaine and am thankful to them that we are all united in fully supporting BBI.”
Support of Mr Tunai and Mr Kasaine is seen as a big boost to BBI as they were regarded diehard supporters of Deputy President William Ruto who had initially been lukewarm to BBI.
It is not known when the Keriako Tobiko team will present their petition to President Uhuru Kenyatta to dethrone Mr Lenku.
The three Governors from Maa Land agreed they will all attend the Tononoka rally on Saturday and are expected to host the BBI edition of the Maa Nation on February 17 in Narok stadium.
