Residents of Butsotso Central ward in Lurambi, Kakamega County now want the government to declare cancer a National disaster.
They are also calling on the government to start a program that will provide regular free medical camps for screening and early treatment.
Led by Amani National Congress-ANC aspiring MCA Daniel Nyangweso, the residents called on MP’s to come up with a bill in parliament that will help Kenyans access cancer screening and treatment for free.
“We are petitioning our leaders to remember those poor people who spent time on the queues to vote them in during elections and consider their health before they can come for their votes.” Nyangweso said.
Speaking in Ebuchinga primary school in Lurambi constituency where he had organized a free medical camp for the residents, Nyangweso said cancer is a menace that has become rampant.
He said both the rich and the poor are affected.
He added that there are many people in the villages who might be suffering from cancer without their knowledge.
Nyangweso said he supports first lady Margret Kenyatta’s beyond zero initiative.
He promised Botsotso Central Ward residents free medical camps in- order to improve their health.
The residents were screened of cancer, treated of Malaria, typhoid, teeth problems and others.
