Kajiado West MP George Sunkuiya has asked the County Government of Kajiado not to put up a modern dumpsite but instead dump waste in old quarries.
Speaking in Ngong, the MP said some quarries are as deep as 50 meters and they should be used as dumpsites.
He is opposed to the Countys plans to decommission the now full Ngong dumpsite to the Vet Farm where a multi-million waste management Plant is to be set up.
The MP has been reportedly leading members of the Keekonyokie clan to oppose the project.
Sunkuiya claims the land where the project is belongs to the clan and he “has not been consulted”.
“There is a problem. I am opposed to excavation of a new place. I do not like it. As good leaders, led by the Governor, we must consult each other. A new site is not good because we will destroy the environment. Already the environment has been destroyed by the Chinese who do quarrying,” he said.
Several leaders from Kajiado have opposed the plans.
On the other hand, Governor Joseph Ole Lenku has vowed to ensure the project will not stop.
Kajiado North MP Joseph Manje and all his MCAs are backing the project as well as the Catholic Church fraternity and education stakeholders.
The 20 acres land at Vet Farm was allocated for the project by the Ministry of Livestock Development in 2007.
