A faulty wheel bearing on an oil tanker caught fire in Busia on Monday morning.
However, quick action by the Fire Brigade from the County Government of Busia saved the situation and the fire was put off before an explosion.
The truck driver Abdi Hissana said he noticed smoke billowing from the left side of the tanker.
“When I stopped to check what was wrong, I realized the tyres had caught fire,”
“I tried to put off the fire using our fire extinguisher but did not succeed. The Busia County fire engine arrived within a short time to contain the fire. I thank the county government for the quick response and let them keep up with that spirit,” he said.
Hissana said the tanker was carrying cooking oil to Kigali, Rwanda from the Port of Mombasa.
“I thank God that I was not carrying petroleum products lest the story could be different”.
County Disaster Management Officer Peter Oporia who led the rescue operations said six fire incidents have occurred since the beginning of the year with the team responding on time.
