Trans Nzoia Governor Patrick Khaemba has told residents that he will not seek a third term even if the Constitution is changed to extend Governors’ terms in office.
A draft document by a special committee of the Council of Governors preparing for a possible referendum proposes that county bosses be allowed to vie for elections beyond the ten years limit.
The committee, co-chaired by Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana and Kiraitu Murungi of Meru, has only met twice since its inception.
Khaemba said he will retire but cautioned the county that “it will not be easy to get a Governor to match his standards”.
“I became your Governor when I had hair on my head, right now my hair has disappeared because of good things I have done for Trans Nzoia, but there are others who use propaganda to tarnish my good reputation,” Khaemba said.
The Governor was reacting to recent propaganda which said he had sold a bus park at sh 5 billion.
Khaemba said those spreading the propaganda had ill motives.
He said he will sue all those who tarnished his name.
Before being elected Trans Nzoia Governor, Khaemba worked at African Development Bank in Uganda. He also served as Cooperatives PS in President Mwai Kibaki’s Government.
