The independent police oversight Authority (IPOA) will intervene in a case where a police officer shot dead a university student at Namanjalala in Kwanza constituency.
Trans Nzoia county police commander Fredrick Ochieng on Saturday said despite the opening of an inquest over the matter, the police have informed IPOA to intervene.
On Friday, Sebastian Simiyu Wanjala a second-year student at Kibabii university was shot dead at their home by a police officer during an illicit brew raid.
“Police have opened an inquest into the death of the deceased. At the same time, we have informed IPOA to come in if they wish to open an independent inquiry “Ochieng wrote on Inform Trans Nzoia WhatsApp Page.
It is said that the officers and police reservists who raided the chang’aa den came from Maili Saba and Namanjalala police posts.
Meanwhile it has been established that after the killing of Simiyu, the same officers raided the home again and roughed up a section of family members and neighbors before arresting seven of them.
This according to the family, is a tactic which being employed by the police to intimidate and silence them in its bid to seek justice.
Jackline Namalwa, the mother to the deceased said the seven were beaten mercilessly, caned before they were arrested.
She said, the seven have been charged with assaulting police officers, incitement and resisting arrest.
The family has reiterated that Simiyu was innocent and that the young boy was armless by the time he was killed.
The family spokesperson who is also aspiring MCA for Matisi Michael Wekesa said that it is shocking police took the law into their hands and killed the university student.
He said the family together with their friends will hire renowned lawyers who will join IPOA in a bid to seek justice.
On Friday, Kwanza aspiring MP Nicholas Wamalwa had indicated that he will also instruct his lawyers to join family lawyers to ensure Justice is served.
Meanwhile a middle-aged man is alleged to have been seriously injured by police at Centre Kwanza area in the same constituency.
Cases of police brutality have become rampant in the area.
