The Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (KEMSA) has delivered shs 54 million worth of drugs to Busia County hospitals.
The hospitals have been without drugs for a month.
The last supplies from KEMSA were in July and lasted up to September before they ran out of stock.
The County Government has factored Sh 202million in the supplementary budget for purchase of drugs.
Speaking at the Matayos Drugs stores where the commodities were delivered, the Supply Chain Management Officer Victor Osaho said most Sub Counties hospitals will receive their consignments by Tuesday with health centers and dispensaries expected to receive their share of drugs by Wednesday.
Osaho said the delivered commodities included laboratory reagents, non-pharmaceuticals and pharmaceuticals, noting that the first batch of commodities will last up to February 2020 before other supplies are procured.
“ The consumption of drugs has increased owing to increased number of patients seeking treatment at public health institutions across the county; those who seek treatment at Busia County Referral Hospital have increased from 120 to 300 per day with most sub county hospitals like Kocholia recording an increase of 40 patients to 80 daily.,” he said.
He said elaborate measures have been put in place to ensure that theft of drugs in various Health institutions ends.
“Delivery of drugs to other health institutions from Matayos must be done by County Government vehicles accompanied by a medical officer; the security manning the gate will take the details of the vehicle, consignment and destination,” he said.
