The Kenya Medical Supplies Agency has delivered essential drugs and non-pharmaceuticals to Busia County, thus ending the shortage which had lasted for a few weeks.
Busia County Referral Hospital (BCRH) received the lion’s share of supplies worth Sh10.1m with drugs worth Sh44m to be shared by other health institutions across the county.
Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong who inspected the consignment at BCRH on Tuesday said his government had procured drugs worth Sh70m, adding that the remaining drugs worth 16m will be delivered later.
“The drugs will last for three months; the time that the next budget would have been approved,” he said.
He asked the hospital management to ensure the drugs are used for the intended purposes.
Ojaamong said the executive had budgeted for Sh350m to go towards procurement of drugs but the County Assembly whittled it to Sh170m.
“In the next budget we want the MCAs and members of the public to ensure the budget for drugs is not reduced to ensure patients don’t suffer when there is a stock out,” he said.
Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi asked those who are bestowed with the task of taking care of the distribution and storage of the drugs to exercise utmost care
