The Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) preliminary design of a dual carriageway at the the Busia Border post has taken into consideration Boda boda tracks, bus bays and footpaths for pedestrians on both sides.
Residents were shown a PowerPoint presentation by Engineer Harriet Avuna during a meeting with the county leadership led by Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi.
KeNHA says the final design will be ready in December 2019.
Request for bids will be done in January 2020 while bid for evaluation and awards will be done in April 2020.
Construction will start in June 2020 and it’s expected to end in June 2021.
Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi said the expanded road will help reduce traffic snarl-ups.
He said that a third lane on each side of the road would have been ideal.
KeNHA’s commitment to develop a bypass and trailer park at Mundika will ease traffic congestion at the busy highway through the Central Business District.
To confirm its commitment to develop the trailer park, Engineer Avuna led teams from KeNHA, Trade Mark East Africa, Kenya Revenue Authority, KERRA and the County Government in the tour of the proposed bypass at Mundika through Mayenje and Burumba.
The National Government received a commitment from the British Government through Trade Mark East Africa (TMEA) to finance the dualling of Busia One Stop Border Post Approach Road under East African Trade and Transport Facilitation Project (EATTFP) to a tune of 3Million USD (Ksh300million).
KeNHA’ s Engineer Paul Omondi said the road is Part of the Kisian – Busia Road (A12, formerly B1) which was designed by KeNHA through a consultant in 2015.
Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi said Busia is a key Stakeholder in the project and shall play a vital role in ensuring success for the project.
He said the County will sensitize the public on the project.
