The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has awarded two contractors the repairs of the dilapidated 101 kilometers Busia-Kisian junction road.
In a formal communication to Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong who had threatened to lead demonstrations over the poor state of the road, KeNHA said repairs of the 42km Ugunja-Busia border (A12) road is being undertaken by Bartum Enterprise Limited contractors at a cost of Sh268m.
KeNHA said the 59km Ugunja-Kisian road has been awarded to Uswonin Construction Limited at a cost of Sh288m.
He added that the contract period for Busia-Ugunja road is 24 months with that of Ugunja-Kisian to take 36 months.
The scope of work includes site clearance, reinstatement of eroded shoulders, provision of drainage structures including cross culverts, application of single surface dressing bituminous and laying of stabilized natural material.
He added that it also includes pothole patching and provision of performance based maintenance services for 36 months after the end of the contract period.
The Authority regretted that the condition of the pavement surface along the busy Northern Corridor B Highway is poor with extensive patching and potholes, adding that the section requires resealing, rehabilitation and widening.
However, KeNHA has remained silent on the planned construction of the dual carriage way of the road stretching from the Busia border to Korinda with already Sh200m paid to Trade Mark East Africa.
Governor Ojaamong said that the poor state of the road has been bothering county residents for a long time.
Public Works, Transport, Roads and Energy Executive Okwara Ekirapa said the Busia-Kisian contractors will carry out maintenance exercise concurrently from Ugunja and Busia border.
