The Kenya Film Classification Board has ordered all exhibitors of DJ Afro commentated movies to stop showing them.
KFCB said those who will be found showing them risk being apprehended and taken to court.
The Board said such movies are not rated and approved by it.
Speaking in his Kakamega office, KFCB regional manager Lameck Omingo said the board has given a two months grace period to film exhibitors to get the movies rated and classified before they can be consumed by the public.
“We had a sensitization meeting in Bungoma County towards the end of last month to sensitize and create awareness about the requirement of the law and KFCB regulations. We also sensitized residents about the legal and illegal films. We dealt with the film content and the kind of audience allowed to view certain films,” Omingo said.
He said the language used in DJ Afro movies is vulgar and inappropriate especially for minors.
Omingo said minors are the largest consumers of the movies in video show rooms which is against the KFCB ethics.
He said KFCB aim is to protect minors from such content.
“We are giving the film owners a grace period of 2 months to come to our offices for verification, rating and classification of the movies. If they do not come, those movies will be burned from the market and if anyone is found showing them-they will have it rough,” he warned.
According to Omingo many school-going children have been affected by the movies and go about imitating the DJs as they speak vulgar languages in the movies.
He added that this has caused many to drop out of school.
“Any person under the age of 18 is considered a child and is therefore not allowed to watch movies that are not for General Exhibition. If any movie shop owner is found showing movies that are not rated GE to under age kids, he will have to face the law.” The manager warned
He also urged the public to work with (KFCB) in ensuring that films that are not rated by the Board are not displayed.
