There is excitement among residents of Kitui Town and its environs after a private investor unveiled plans to put up an investment worth Ksh850 million.
The giant investment is coming in the form of an Ultra-Modern Shopping Mall.
It is set to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs for the locals.
According to the design seen by Hot News, Wendo Shopping Mall is an eye-popping architectural monster never seen before in the entire Eastern region.
Its completion in about 17 months is set to revolutionize the ease of doing business while giving a kick to the economy of the county, according to the investors, who further said is keen on creating opportunities for the local youths.
The state-of-the-art mall, a four-storey building will be sitting on a piece of land opposite Kitui GK prison – plot number 1/658 that is legally owned by Checker Oil Products Limited.
The Ministry of Lands CS Faridah Karoney in 2019, approved and certified the land documents.
Others who were illegally claiming ownership of the plot were declared “squatters and trespassers”
According to the design proposal, the sh850 million Mall will host an array of multimillion businesses.
It will provide space and amenities for Motor Vehicle Showroom, Banking Halls, Supermarkets and Mobile phones and electronic shops.
Other businesses to be hosted in the modern mall include furniture shops, boutiques, coffee shops and food courts, retail shops as well as management offices, service centers and an ample parking area.
Fitted with lifts, elevators, staircases, and specially designed pathways for those using wheelchairs, the mall whose design has got the county residents already talking is also designed to have an open-air Kamba marketplace covering 1000 square meters on the ground floor.
“This is meant to celebrate the rich heritage and enterprise of the Akamba people,” said the investor.
All these businesses, the investor says, would serve as flood gates to thousands of jobs and job opportunities for the county youth, who make part of the huge Kenyan population reeling from unemployment.
Already, a leading supermarket in the country has booked space as an anchor tenant.
With the supermarket alone, tens of hundreds of jobs will be created.
“This investment is about economic empowerment. It will not only attract investors to the region but also create employment for the local youth. Our vision is to create a robust and thriving environment for the residents of Kitui and its environs to access social amenities and facilities,” said the company’s chief operating officer Wilbroad Peter.
And the town is already talking in -support of the investment.
The local youths are upbeat and in full support of the life changing investment.
“The mall will be a complete game changer. We need this kind of investment for our county to grow economically while opening jobs and business opportunities for the local people. The investor must be supported by all well-meaning people,” said James Ngumbau, a Kitui youth leader while warning against backward politics to derail the project.
Joseph Singi, a trader who specializes in electronics said he is looking forward to getting a stall in the mall and expand his business.
“Our town can only grow and get to international standards with this kind of investment. We actually need more of these,” remarked Singi after seeing the proposed design.
“We are committed to not only changing the face of Kitui but also bringing jobs and business opportunities to the young people through our investment,” the investor added.
A majority of Kitui town residents are unanimous that this sort of investment cannot be derailed for whatever reason.
“It looks good. Super good. This is in line with the governor’s agenda on wealth creation and empowerment,” remarked a Chief Officer.
