Governor Joseph Ole Lenku has dramatically relocated a food produce market from the Tarakea border in Oloitokitok; 4 kilometers into the Kenyan side.
The market which deals with farm produce between Kenya and Tanzania has been operating at the border point and is controlled by cartels mostly from the Tanzanian side.
In a high stakes diplomatic engagement with County Security team and border point customs officials, Lenku engineered the movement of the market to a new market he has built in Ilasit town, four kilometers along the Tarakea- Oloitokitok Road.
Yesterday, the new market hosted more than 100 trucks of food produce especially those carrying potatoes.
Traders were this evening excited at the new County Market that now places them under the Kenyan trading laws and regulations away from the alleged punitive laws from Tanzanian authorities.
The market has effectively cut off a cartel chain that operates at the border point and which is linked to some local politicians.
After inspecting the settling of the traders today, the Governor led a high powered Kenyan team that included Kajiado South Deputy County Commissioner Wesley Koech to an emergency closed door meeting with customs officials at the Tarakea border point.
