A bitter war has erupted between supporters of key UDA gubernatorial aspirants in Kajiado over campaign financing by a key investor in the County.
Kajiado South MP Katoo Ole Metito has beaten Kajiado East MP Peris Tobiko, his main rival in UDA, as the multinationals’ choice for the Governor position in 2022.
This means Ms Tobiko has lost to Mr Metito the logistical support of multinationals such as Tata Chemicals Magadi Ltd who are now said to be sponsoring aspirants close to Deputy President William Ruto.
Mr Metito’s political aides and a carefully selected team of staff from the multinational have been busy mobilizing for a youth rally slated for tomorrow in Kajiado town.
It is the involvement of the two entities in the rally tomorrow that has caused jitters among youth leaders in the County.
Today, the youth leaders held a consultative meeting in Kajiado town and condemned the increasing involvement of the multinationals in local opposition politics.
Led by Nait Lesiamon and Nkatet Mosika, the leaders said it was an abomination for a multinational to engage in “subversive political activities that were aimed at supporting opposition aspirants”.
The leaders said they were disturbed that youth were being mobilized by an investor who has shown total disregard for the host community leading to protracted legal court battles with the National Government, County Government and several youth whose cases are still pending at Kajiado’s Law Courts.
The youth meeting is scheduled for tomorrow in Kajiado town and is set to be attended by Mr Metito.
“Instead of working with both levels of Governments to resolve outstanding tax, land rates and royalties, they are sponsoring youth for a political meeting with opposition aspirants. It is despicable and unacceptable and we shall resist, “said Mr Lesiamon.
Mr Mosika said the youth were being lured with huge amounts of money but he said they would boycott the meeting since it goes against “our community interests”.
The multinational is said to have settled on Mr Metito against the sitting Governor Joseph Ole Lenku who has been embroiled with the multinational in a vicious battle for County land rates and dispossession of more than 200,000 acres of community land in Magadi Ward.
