A middle-aged man identified as Peterson Marangi was yesterday assaulted on suspicion of being gay.
The 45-year-old told police that a mob nearly killed him on 16th June 2017 when another man shouted at him and accused him of being gay.
The Star Newspaper reported on Monday.
“I was going about my business in Thika CBD. I had gone to check on my car in the garage when I was attacked. I sustained (multiple injuries) a deep cut on my right hand, stomach and my left thigh,” he said.
Police said they have launched investigations into the incident with the aim of arresting the perpetrators.
Thika OCPD Eric Mugambi warned members of the public against attacking any one perceived to be gay.
“No one has a right to attack another person because of his or her sexual orientation. Those found attacking others will be arrested and arraigned in court and charged with assault. The law is clear, we will spare no one,” Mugambi said.
However, other members of the public said that Mwangi was attacked by members of the Mungiki sect who are against LGBTQ.
“Those are Mungiki youths who roughed him and beat him up. He must have offended them,” said Jackson Rop a cobbler.
