The management of Narok Water and Sewerage Service Company is under fire for denying staff a salary increment as earlier agreed.
The staff alleged that the management has blocked them from joining or forming a union.
Some staff told Hot News that an earlier meeting with the management resolved that the staff would be given an increment of shs 14,000.
They said since last year May, the company has been making shs 11 million in profits.
“We had agreed but the then Board Chairman and MD Stanley Kuyoni declined. We then agreed on shs 7,000. They haven’t implemented the decision so far,” said an employee who requested anonymity.
The then Board was led by Letulal ole Masikonte.
Together with two other directors, the three resigned in February to join elective politics.
Joseph Koech and Lekishon ole Geem reportedly colluded with MD Stanley Kuyon and the Chairman to frustrate the staff.
Letulal ole Masikonte is vying for MCA Olpusumoru ward Narok North, Joseph Koech Angata Barikoi ward Kilgoris constituency and Lekishon Ole Geem alias (ole sepe) Lolgorian ward Kilgoris constituency.
The current Board chairman is Joseph Ole Nkadado whom staff wants to address their issues.
Last year in 2021, the staff complained that the Company had gone broke.
Employees had gone for months without salaries.
Several employees said statutory deductions like NHIF, NSSF and KRA were not remitted on time.
An employee who sought anonymity told Hot News that in February 2021, KRA wrote a demand letter, and the management was forced to remit the cash.
However, the employee said then that the company was making shs 10 million in profits every month and wondered why it was doing poorly.
“There is no increment despite the hard work we do. The company has not been remitting our loan deduction to Family Bank. We had agreed with the Bank and the Company. We are forced to pay interest or at times the bank deducts the loan from our entire salary, and we go home without pay,” said the employee.
The employees also claimed that the Company does not pay them overtime allowances and that there is no safety at work.
They claimed NARWASCO no longer provides chemical masks, raincoats, and safety boots and that several of them had fallen ill.
The employees added that the management had resorted to paying their salaries through MPESA instead of bank accounts.
The Company’s Managing Director Stanley Kuyon did not respond to our enquiries when reached for comment.
The employees called on Water Cabinet Secretary to intervene and have their grievances addressed.
“The Company’s cash is funding the local campaigns. We know they are funding the former Board Chairman and two directors who left. They are also funding Narok Gubernatorial candidate Patrick Ole Ntutu who is an UDA candidate. This must be stopped,” they said.
