The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has started investigations into the fatal shooting of baby Dan Githinji who was shot dead a week ago by a stray bullet from the police.
In a press release sent to newsrooms on Saturday evening, the authority said it will forward its recommendations upon conclusion of investigations to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for directions.
The release has been signed by the agency’s chairperson Anne Makori.
The two years and nine months old baby was killed on September 8 2019 at Soweto slum,Kahawa West in Nairobi county during a police operation in the area.
“The Independent Policing Oversight Authority pursuant to its statutory mandate under section 25(1) of the IPOA Act, that requires the authority to investigate any death or injury caused by police action launched independent investigations on own motion into the incident with a view of unraveling the circumstances leading to the fatal shooting.” Said Makori.
She added that the authority is committed to fairness and independence.
Master Dan Githinji was reportedly shot dead after police officers who had raided a chang’aa den shot aimlessly to disperse residents whom they had disagreed with.
Residents said the police were collecting bribes and when some residents declined to give them bribes- a quarrel ensued thus the shooting.
The police officers involved in the shooting have since been arrested.
