Westlands MP Timothy Wanyonyi has defended fellow legislators over their demands for an increase in allowances.
Speaking at a City Hotel, Wanyonyi said what the MPs are asking for is within the law.
He said some MPs travel from upcountry and are forced to put up in City Hotels since they don’t have houses in Nairobi.
Wanyonyi said several other public servants have house allowances yet MPs do not have.
“Why not an MP, This negative campaign against MPs must end,” he said.
On Monday, MPs said they want the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to reinstate and increase several allowances that the commission scrapped.
If the MPs are given the allowances, their salaries could increase from the current Sh1.1 million to between Sh2.1 million and Sh2.9 million a month.
In a memorandum to the SRC, MPs are seeking to have their car grants doubled from the current Sh5 million to Sh10 million.
They also want to increase their mortgage entitlements, extend their medical cover to more than one spouse and retain huge car maintenance and mileage allowances.
