Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong has urged churches to partner with the county government and non-governmental organizations to alleviate poverty in society.
He said the partnership will also see the churches and the Counties benefit from economies of scale.
Speaking at St Peters Kaliwa Catholic Church during a funds drive in aid of the completion of the Church, the Governor said that churches have vast resources which remain untapped.
“Kaliwa Church is built on a six-acre piece of land; there is need for partnership with counties,” he said.
He added that devolved functions like water, ECDE and health can be put up in churches’ owned assets to benefit local communities.
Ojaamong said his government was on the right track with many development projects being implemented.
Busia County Assembly Speaker Bernard Wamalwa who was the Chief Guest echoed the governor’s sentiments saying for churches to develop – they will need to partner with the Counties.
“Church members should form SACCO’s to benefit from the County Government’s Co-operative and Trade Funds,” he said.
Amukura Catholic Parish Priest Fr Dunstan Epalat said Busia County has better roads compared to neighboring Bungoma.
“Tribal politics will not build the county; the Governor needs support to deliver on his pledges,” he said.
Fr Epalat said the high level talks going on between the County and relevant National government departments for the proposed airport in the county are welcome.
