Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has send 143 revenue collection staff on compulsory leave.
The Clerks were on Tuesday send on a 60 day compulsory leave.
Oparanya said some have never taken leave since 2013.
He said the move is aimed at reducing expenditure.
Addressing Senior County Executives and the Media at the county chambers, Oparanya directed the CEC members, Chief Officers as well as Sub County, Ward and Community area administrators to take over revenue collection duties.
He said this is in order to avoid over dependence on the division of revenue framework between the National Government and Counties.
Oparanya said he will make changes in the Finance Department in order to deal with low Revenue collection.
The Kakamega County chief who is also the council of governors chairman reiterated that time has come for the counties to look for means of generating their own revenue for development without necessarily depending on the National government.
“Our objective is to ensure that we seal all leakages and increase own revenue from 5% to 10% of total shareable revenue from the National government. Last year, we did very well in revenue collection increasing from Kshs500 million to Kshs890 million. Our target is Kshs1.5 billion,” he said.
Oparanya also introduced the newly recruited Head of Kakamega Revenue Agency, Beatrice Memo,a retired KRA Commissioner of Customs who has joined the County to boost revenue collection efforts.
He was flanked by Deputy Governor Philip Kutima and Finance CEC Geoffrey Omulayi.
