800,000 Turkana residents may starve to death because of the raging drought if they do not get relief food.
Last week, an old man reportedly died of hunger in Elelea village, Kerio, Turkana central after starving for four days.
Turkana County is estimated to have at least 1.2 million people.
In 2009 census, it had 855,000 people.
According to residents, the drought has been caused by lack of rain for the last 10 months.
There was also the locust invasion and the locust destroyed vegetation including food in Irrigation schemes along the Turwel and Kerio River in Turkana East.
Speaking during the flagging off –of trucks at the National Cereals and Produce Board in Lodwar town, Turkana Deputy Governor Peter Lotesro said the flagged trucks are going to the most affected areas in the County.
He said the most affected areas are Nakalale in Turkana North, Nanaam and Songot in West, Lobokat in Kainuk Turkana South, Kibish, Kaeris and Lapur in Turkana North.
“The County Government of Turkana has flagged off 36,000 bags of 50 kgs maize, 10,000 bags 50kgs beans and 10,000 20 litres of cooking Oil to be taken to affected areas. We plan to reach more partners to assist is,” he said.
The deputy governor said only the County Government and World Food Programme have responded to residents calls for relieve food.
He asked the National Government to help the residents.
Moses Nawoton, the Deputy Director Disaster Management in the county said each family will receive 10kgs of maize; 5kgs beans and 2liters of cooking oil.
Disaster Management CEC Charles Lokiyoto said the County Government has put all the measures in place to see that the food meant for relief reaches the designated areas.
