Several leaders from Nyanza region have asked Kenyans to reject the yet to be released BBI report if its aim is to “kill” devolution.
Speaking at a Nairobi Hotel, the leaders said there is speculation about the BBI report, yet it hasn’t been released.
“You cannot pretend to be against or for BBI. We should all wait for the report. However, we should not worry since it’s a mere report that will be presented to the President and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga who are the ones who commissioned it,” said former Embakasi East MP John Ogutu Omondi.
The MP added that the Building Bridges Initiative members should ensure that they come up with good proposals on how Kenyans will be united.
The BBI committee was formed after the famous handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga after the contested 2017 elections.
On Saturday a section of leaders from Mt. Kenya region expressed their reservations over the content of the BBI report.
Citizen TV through its online publication Citizen digital, reported the leaders saying they will not support the report if it will not have addressed critical issues of representation and equal distribution of resources.
Leading the onslaught against the initiative championed by President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga, is Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri who said that the constitutional change should be an all-inclusive process not a self-preservation scheme to secure positions for certain leaders.
There is talk that the BBI is meant to create a powerful Prime Minister position to be occupied by President Uhuru Kenyatta and a ceremonial President to be occupied by Raila Odinga.
On the streets, the initiative has been dubbed Beba Baba Initiative.
