The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has dispatched survey teams for the Busia Rural Electrification Program.
The program is expected to benefit thousands of Busia County residents upon completion.
The Ward-based program that will cut across the county will cost Sh81.5million.
Busia County through Ward Development Funds has contributed Sh46.5m towards the program with REA contributing Sh35m in the shilling for shilling arrangement.
A total of 39 sites across all the seven sub counties are set to benefit from the program; three sites were commissioned by Busia Deputy Governor Moses Mulomi in late April.
Surveyor and team leader Ben Wanyama Situma said they will take two weeks to complete the survey adding that REA will dispatch contractors to commence the works in the first week of June.
Chief Officer for Energy Engineer Gilbert Oduory urged Members of the County Assembly to continue investing in REA programs so as to maximize on transformers in this financial year.
“There is need for MCAs to allocate more funds to reach more consumers in their respective wards; underutilization of the transformers will lead to few households benefitting from electricity,” Engineer Oduory said.
Speaking while commissioning the three sites, Mulomi said the flagship program is for the good of the people, noting that their aim is to ensure that all the areas are covered with electricity.
