Kitui East Member of Parliament Nimrod Mbai has threatened to mobilize youths in Kitui County to bar the local government from collecting revenue in major markets.
Mr Mbai said that he was leading the recruitment drive of volunteer youths from every major market for the revenue shut down.
The MP said that this was one of the ways to push governor Charity Ngilu to sack her embattled CEC in charge of finance Mary Nguli who was recently impeached by the county assembly.
The officer was impeached by the MCAs on account of incompetence, financial impropriety and lack of integrity.
After her impeachment motion was unanimously passed by the assembly, Nguli went to court and obtained restraining orders barring the assembly from investigating her.
“She is in office courtesy of a court order but we need a political solution to this impasse. The officer must be relieved of her duties following the public outcry the way Sonko (Nairobi governor) does,” Mbai said.
The MP said in two weeks’ time, if Nguli does not leave office, all doors to major markets in the county will be shut down for revenue collectors.
“We can’t continue giving her more revenue which goes into people’s pockets,” he said.
Two weeks ago, police in Kitui busted a cartel led by a top county government contractor Eunice Kilonzo that was allegedly colluding with the county minister to keep the county revenue in their houses.
The police found KSh100, 000 in Kilonzo’s house which they said was part of the collected revenue although they were looking for KSh100 million as tipped by an informer.
Some of the targeted markets that generate huge revenue for the county include Kwa vonza, Syongila barrier, Kalundu market, Kithomboani, Mwingi market, Mutomo, Zombe and Mbitini.
Others are major livestock markets such as Mutha, Kisasi and Tseikuru.
“The action of the county assembly must be respected. The minister must exit for county residents to see the value of the revenue paid,” Mbai stated.
Before she was employed in Kitui, Ms Nguli worked in Kiambu County under Governor William Kabogo in the same docket of finance where she survived three impeachment motions at the Kiambu County Assembly.
