The newly self-imposed Luhya elders Wycliffe Oparanya and Eugene Wamalwa are keeping their fingers crossed and hopping that President Uhuru Kenyatta will listen to them and implement their proposals.
This is after traversing Western Kenya and causing sleepless nights for ANC and Ford Kenya leaders Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula.
Sources close to Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong, Oparanya and Eugene said the three are waiting for President Uhuru Kenyatta to have all the views they collected implemented.
The proposals that also included those of the Sabaots were handed over to Interior CS Fred Matiang’i by CS Wamalwa during the consultative meeting last week.
The meeting was between Western leaders with National Development, Implementation, Communication Cabinet Committee (NDICCC) in Nairobi on Thursday.
On infrastructure, the elders want the President to expedite the dualling of Busia – Kisumu road to Korinda.
They also want construction of an airport or airstrip in Busia County, fish landing bays and Muluanda Bridge in Funyula to improve connectivity.
Also included in the Memorandum to the President includes bringing to a halt restricted movement at the border that has brought about cross border inequalities including arrest of fishermen by Uganda authorities.
Other proposals include development of 824-acre Nasewa land into industrial parks to boost the economy of the region and fast tracking of the sugar task force report.
The elders endorsed the resolutions by five Governors and 40 Members of Parliament and Senators from the region on 29th May 2020 in Kajiado and welcomed their decision to work together in achieving unity.
Among the Kajiado resolutions includes the Sh13.2b KURRA annuity program of May 2019 in 10 counties including Busia that entailed upgrading the Busia-Alupe bypass road to bitumen standards.
Others are to have each county have a university with fully fledged charter and to revive the sugar and cotton industries.
