Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong has urged women to take advantage of scholarships and bursaries offered by his government to advance their education.
The governor regretted that there are few women in the county especially Teso region who have graduated in PhDs.
He said there is need for concerted efforts to address that anomaly.
Speaking in Amagoro after a thanks giving mass for Dr Naomi Apali Mogoria who graduated with Doctor of Philosophy in Planning at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology, the Governor said Teso region has recorded very few women with “Permanent Head Damage”.
“There is need to sponsor more women especially in Teso region to emulate Prof Rachel Masake who was the first woman to graduate with PHD from the community,” he said.
He encouraged more women to go for challenging courses like Medicine, Law, Engineering and Physical Planning.
He said this will help narrow the existing gaps in those demanding jobs.
The Governor said the county needs physical planners to develop spatial plans for the county’s major towns, noting that lack of manpower in this vital department had impacted negatively in spatial plan development.
Dr Naomi challenged women to embrace that fighting spirit that saw her start the course afresh at JOUST despite spending the colosal sums of money.
Her husband and Chief officer for Education and Vocational Training Daniel Mogoria recalled how he sanctioned his wife to pursue her master’s degree, leaving behind their seven-month-old baby under his care.
Former Teso South Member of Parliament Mary Emaase said there is no woman who is limited, noting that they can achieve their desired goals at desired times.
Teso North MP Oku Kaunya described Dr Naomi as a simple and intelligent lady who has raised the profile of his constituency.
