Despite the Kenya Bureau of Standards releasing a list of maize flour brands that are contaminated, most Kenyans are still consuming them.
Following the orders, some traders have lowered the prices to attract consumers.
A survey by Hot News has revealed.
The most affected areas are Upcountry.
The banned Unga brands are Dola maize flour produced by Kitui Flour Mills, Kifaru by Alpha Grain Limited, Starehe by Pan African Grain Millers, Two Ten by Kenblest Limited and Jembe by Kensalrise Limited.
Hot News visited Narok County in Ntulele, Siyiapei and Ewaso Nyiro .
Shop owners alleged that top government officials who own Floor Mills have colluded with KEBs and want several Unga firms closed so that that they can sell their Unga.
KEBS, the state agency in charge of quality standards, last week said several Maize Floor brands in retail outlets, have not met the required standards as they contain higher levels aflatoxin.
James Sangale a trader in Narok, said this was a scheme to favor some traders adding that he will continue to sale the banned floor brands.
”The Government has no sense of direction and a clear policy on this. I had stocked more of these products. What will I do with them? Will the government compensate me,”Sangale posed?
He regretted that millions of Kenyans have been exposed to the harmful effects of aflatoxin.
Some traders in Siyiapei Narok county, sold the banned brands at sh 110 down from 120.
The traders are blaming KEBS for the mess.
Aflatoxin is believed to cause Cancer of the Liver.
John Manangoi, a trader in Ntulele Narok County vowed to continue selling his stock.
