Trans Nzoia Governor Patrick Khaemba wants the National Assembly to abolish the law that requires only KEMSA to supply medical equipments to Counties.
The law which is under the health act is currently suspended.
Addressing a gathering while receiving personal protective equipments (PPEs) for Trans Nzoia Health workers from Equity bank foundation, Khaemba said the law slows down procurement and denies local suppliers a chance to work with counties.
“At times, KEMSA has no equipment that we urgently need. We should do away with such laws to enable us get supplies from other suppliers. This will also empower local companies,” he said.
He added the new referral hospital is ready to act as an isolation center for covid 19 patients.
The Governor said Trans Nzoia County has received 200 beds for the new facility.
The facility will collaborate with other partners to offer specialized treatment.
Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa said he will table a motion in the National Assembly to make changes on the County procurement laws to allow other companies to supply drugs to local hospitals.
Wamalwa lauded the county government of Trans Nzoia for coming up with a referral hospital which he said will help to provide quality medication in Western and Northrift region.
Equity Bank Foundation’s Polycap Igathe said the PPEs were procured from part of sh.1.1 billion his organization had set aside to fight Covid 19.
In the first phase,Igathe said his organization bought PPEs worth 237 million and that another consignment of equipment worth sh 400 million will be delivered to ensure all health workers are well protected.
