Motorists along the Nairobi -Nakuru highway will still have to endure “poor visibility” after vandals led by Boda Boda riders removed hundreds of cateyes along the road.
The devices were meant to improve visibility.
Cat’seye or Road stud is a retroreflective safety device used in road marking.
It improves visibility at night especially when there is mist, fog, and rain.
Last month, KeNHA fitted the devices between flyover/ Njambini, Soko Mpya, Sonko Mjinga, Kijabe, Kimende and Nyambari along the Nairobi Nakuru Highway.
Several grisly accidents have occurred along this stretch in the past.
As one leaves Limuru and heads to Naivasha, the area is always foggy, narrow due to the landscape and slippery.
According to officials at KeNHA, there was need to install Cateyes on the stretch to save lives.
In October, motorists lauded KeNHA for the move since they had a smooth ride on this stretch.
However, last week, most of the Cateyes were removed thus endangering motorists.
An official at KeNHA who requested anonymity said the devices have been removed by Boda Boda riders who have installed them behind their bikes so that they can be visible while moving at night.
“This amounts to economic sabotage. Yes, the bikers will improve their safety whereas they endanger other motorists. This is wrong. Bikers should buy reflector jackets or buy their own Cateyes,” the official said.
KeNHA called on police officers from Sonko Mjinga Police stations, Kinale Police post and Lari Police station to increase their patrols and help arrest the vandals.
