Cherangany MP Joshua Kutuny has condemned the government for failing to buy maize in Trans Nzoia and Uasin Gishu counties to feed the hungry.
He said the Jubilee administration is “hypocritical” by failing to buy the maize that is in stores and distributing it to hunger stricken residents of Baringo and Turkana Counties.
Speaking to Hot News, the MP said most farmers still have maize rotting in their stores.
Kuttuny said the farmers could not sell the maize to the government because of low prices.
He said the government through the National Cereals and Produce Board should buy the maize and distribute it to the affected residents.
“This government has misplaced priorities- the stability of the nation depends on how healthy its population is” Kuttuny said.
Kuttuny regretted that the ministry of agriculture has not imported subsidized fertilizer to distribute to farmers at affordable prices.
Farmers are yet to plant maize.
Last year, most farmers planted maize from March 2.
The vocal MP said more people might starve in the near future if the government does not take measures to ensure there is subsidized fertilizer and seeds.
He wondered why there has been no official Government report on the hunger situation in the Country.
“Most farmers are being discouraged by the government because of lack of incentives. Lack of market for their produce, poor prices and lack of subsidies leads to lack of food. Kenyans will starve” he said.
