Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has assured the residents of North Eastern region and several road contractors of increased security.
He said the Government will provide round the clock security to contractors and engineers working on key infrastructure projects.
The CS spoke while touring the region and said criminal elements and extremists will not be allowed to sabotage their operations.
In January, an IED destroyed a four-wheel drive vehicle belonging to the Kenya National Highway Authority engineers, killing the four occupants.
Police who attended the scene said they recovered three bodies, while a fourth one was badly destroyed in the impact.
The CS said construction of key roads such as Garissa-Wajir-Mandera and Lamu-Mandera roads will open up the North Eastern Region for development and economic growth.
“The Government has scaled partnerships with the local communities to flush out criminal elements and violent extremists. To ensure the safety of security officers, plans are at an advanced stage to procure modern equipment, including choppers, drones, MRAPs, and APCs,” he said.
He said the Government will invest more than Ksh.20B in modernization of security equipment and address the welfare of security officers.
He visited security camps in Wajir and Mandera Counties to motivate frontline security officers and acknowledged their dedication, diligence, and patriotism.
