Gem MP Elisha Odhiambo has kicked off the distribution of bursary cheques to students in his constituency.
Unlike other MPs who sent MCAs and their PA’s to distribute the cheques, Elisha is doing it himself.
Speaking to Hot News, Elisha famously knew as Akuba said he is distributing the cheques himself so that he can explain to those who missed the bursaries why they were left out.
“Sometimes some parents and students do not qualify for the bursaries. However, some believe we have denied them. It’s not always so because we have to identify the most deserving cases first. Then we can ensure other cases are considered in the next disbursement,” he said.
A total of shs 17.5 million is being shared among 3,000 students from the 6 wards in Gem constituency.
Students in boarding secondary schools are receiving shs 8,000 whereas day scholars shs 5,000.
Those in colleges and Universities are receiving shs 10,000.
The top 10 students in KCPE and KCSE in each ward are also receiving a full scholarship from the Gem Bursary fund.
“I am prioritizing education so that Gem continues to be the most educated constituency since independence. We have increased bursary awards from a maximum of shs 3,000 per student as done by my predecessor to shs 10,000. We are also prioritizing top performing students who come from humble backgrounds so as to enhance meritocracy”
