The Kenyan Government will spend sh 2 billion to mechanize all prison farms countrywide that have arable land.
Interior CS Kithure Kindiki said the Government will buy new equipment to modernize the prison farms and increase their productivity.
He said this will increase food production in the Country.
The CS said the Prisons Department under the Ministry of Interior and National Administration boasts of 86 prison farms with a total of over 18,200 acres of land.
He spoke while visiting the Mwea Prison rice farm in Kirinyaga County.
“Mechanization of Prison farms will boost food production and using at least 20% of prison land on Agriculture contributes to food security ventures in the Country,” he said.
During the tour, the CS inspected the ongoing reforms, among them mechanization of Prison farms, decongesting prisons, through the ‘One Prisoner, One bed, One mattress initiative.
He also addressed Prisons staff welfare and said the Government will review archaic laws in Correctional facilities.
