Nairobi City has yet again won a major global award.
The City has stamped its authority as the region’s economic hub and Africa’s fastest rising City.
Kenya’s capital on Tuesday beat 105 other cities in the world to emerge winner in social and economic equity award.
This was during the ongoing Milan Pact Awards 2019, in Montpellier, France.
The awards focused on governance, sustainable diets and nutrition, social and economic equity, food production, food supply and distribution, food waste prevention, reduction and management.
The win was majorly attributed to the city’s commitment to spur agricultural production within an agribusiness model that contributes to the growth of the economy.
Governor Mike Sonko, who is France, said the award is among others that the city has received in the last two years.
This, he says, will be a major boost for the Capital City.
“The outside world keeps recognizing the efforts we are doing to change the face of the capital city and our strategic plans for every sector are proving to be positive,” Sonko said.
The Governor said the county will continue promoting food production initiatives in the city, noting that the sector remains relevant to creation of jobs for the youth.
“It is one sector that we cannot wish away and our focus is to have more youth involved for sustainable production and economic empowerment,” Sonko said.
Other category winners were Tel Aviv (the Governance award), Kazan (sustainable diets and nutrition award), Rio De Janerio (food production category), hosts Montpellier (food supply and distribution award), Sao Paulo (food waste category), Mezitli (challenging environment category) and Washington (highest score city award).
The Nairobi city county team that accompanied the governor include CEC Agriculture Pauline Kahiga, Chief officer Agriculture and disaster management Ann Mwenda and Principal Agricultural officer Winfred Katumo.

At the same time, Governor Sonko has yet again been invited by the mayors of Seoul and Seongnam City for the WeGO executive committee (EXCOM) meeting which be held on October 14 to October 16, 2019.
The theme of the meeting is “Advancing Human-Centered Smart Cities” where over 1,000 metropolitan and smart leaders from the public are expected to attend.
The dates from Seoul and Seongnam was signed by mayors Woo-Son Park and Soomi-Yun respectively.
Governor Sonko said Nairobi will continue working with leaders across the world in advancing economic development and the need to create smart cities.
