Close to 40 residents of Ongata Rongai have petitioned the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to close Exciting Hotel, accusing the owner of bribing police and Kajiado County officials to overlook the hotel’s pollution and noise nuisance.
The residents allege that the hotel owner, Cyprian Kanake, is “untouchable” and has been able to operate the hotel with impunity despite numerous complaints to the authorities.
In their petition, the residents state that the hotel’s sewage is polluting nearby water sources, posing a health hazard to the community.
They also complain of excessive noise from the hotel’s entertainment activities, which disturbs their peace at night.
“We are living in a toxic environment because of this hotel,” said one resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“The sewage is flowing into our homes and the noise is unbearable. We can’t sleep at night.”
Another resident said that they had reported the hotel to the police and Kajiado County officials on several occasions, but no action had been taken.
“We believe that the hotel owner is bribing the police and county officials to look the other way,” the resident said.
“We are tired of this impunity. We are calling on NEMA to close the hotel immediately.” He said.
NEMA has confirmed that it has received the petition from the Ongata Rongai residents.
The agency said that it is investigating the allegations and will take appropriate action if necessary.”We are aware of the allegations against Exciting Hotel,” said a NEMA official.
“We are currently investigating the matter and will take appropriate action if necessary.” he said.
