50 pupils from KihumbuIni Primary School in Kangemi were hospitalized on Wednesday afternoon as a result of suffocating from teargas fumes.
The teargas was allegedly thrown into the school by police officers who were dispersing residents who were protesting the high cost of living.
A resident said the teargas was lobbed in grade 7 class.
The kids lacked oxygen and were rushed to Eagles nursing home.
They are under close monitoring and once they stabilize we will release them-said a parent.
“Police lobbed teargas into the school where the pupils were holed up in their classrooms. Several pupils suffocated and were rushed to eagle nursing home in Kangemi. Earlier, reports indicated one had died but that was not true,” said Millicent Oyangi a resident.
Area MP Tim Wanyonyi said he will confirm if there was any fatality.
The incident forced motorists to avoid Waiyakai way after the residents barricaded the road to protest the police action.
Earlier in the day, police teargassed Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi as he led Azimio protests in Nairobi on Wednesday morning.
The lawmaker and his supporters were dispersed by police in Kangemi, Nairobi as they started demonstrations against the high cost of living.
