Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Saturday visited some of the over 120,000 squatters who were settled in the famous Waitiki Land in Likoni, Mombasa.
The Governor said the settling of the 943 squatters will remain a great achievement.
Sonko said he played a major role together with other leaders in reaching out to President Uhuru Kenyatta over the issue.
“We fought hard to ensure that this matter is settled and it will remain to be a historic achievement,” Sonko said.
Sonko is leading Team Wanjiku on a two-day tour of the Coast.
On Saturday, Team Wanjiku made several stops in Mtwapa, Nyali, Likoni and Kwale as they drummed up support for the Big Four agenda, the handshake and the Blue Economy.
“We are focused on Wanjiku. Wanjiku is mama Mboga, the cobbler, mason, fish vendor, and hawker, tout. We know you are hungry,” said Sonko.
Sonko said Team Wanjiku has always been caring about the common person.
“That is why we pushed for the resolution of the Waitiki land issue in Likoni,” he said.
The issue was solved back in 2015 when President Uhuru Kenyatta met the owner of the land Evans Waitiki.
It had become a major political tool for the opposition back then, but the governor said that such pressure from Kenyans helped solve the matter.
He urged the Mombasa County Government to cater for the basic needs of the squatters.
“They need water, security and food and the county government should help them because they are residents here and deserve better services.”
At Nyali constituency, Sonko said Team Wanjiku is advocating for creation of employment opportunities for the youth.
“When I look at you, I see you are all hungry. That is why the President was here the other day to open the Bandari Maritime Academy to create job opportunities,” he said.
He latter led Team Wanjiku members to attend a rally at Alidina in Jomvu, Mombasa County.
He was accompanied by Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, EALA MP Simon Mbugua, politicians Kalembe Ndile, Stanley Livondo among others.
