A lobby group – Kenyans for Usawa has accused the Judiciary for not being committed to the welfare of the Kenyans.
In a statement outside Kenya’s Supreme Court on Friday, group chairman Livingstone Ngugi said that Kenyans from all walks of life must be protected against oppression and mistreatment.
The group said those in positions of authority are perpetuating impunity, corruption, and intimidating “poor Kenyans”.
“Today we would like to address the continued abuse of power by some members of the Judiciary. Several public figures have colluded with them to create a separate and favorable justice system. This system serves the rich,” he said.
He said despite Kenya having the 2010 constitution, Chief Justice David Maraga continues to allow the application of favorable judgments for the rich and the corrupt.
“Maraga has been quick to defend the Judiciary against accusations yet time and again he is proven wrong by simple facts such as the conviction of the Akasha drug smugglers in the US court. Whereas Kenyan judges namely Justice Dora Chepkwony who is based in Mombasa High Court, were unable to make a ruling on the case for well over 4 years,” Ngugi said.
He said the New York District court was able to not only conduct mentions and hearings into the case but also to convict the Akasha brothers on criminal charges within 6 months.
They said the case facing Deputy Chief Justice should be fast tracked.
Ngugi said only the rich are being issued with anticipatory bail.
They called for the suspension of Justice Dora Chepkwony from the Judiciary.
