All Kenyans using Matatus and other Public Serve Vehicles have been warned against boarding already full vehicles.
Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai said that anyone found boarding a full Matatu will be arrested and the Matatu left to proceed.
“We will not mind where it is. You are on your own if you board an already full Matatu. We will order you to alight and the Matatu will proceed to drop other passengers who have seats,” warned the IG.
The directive has been issued to traffic police officers and it’s in effect starting today Thursday.
While addressing a Press conference, the IG said that Matatu drivers and Conductors will not be solely to blame for overloading because some passengers squeeze themselves in already full matatus.
Mutyambai asked Kenyans not to board full Matatus.
His warning comes at a time when many Kenyans are travelling upcountry for the Christmas Holidays.
Most of the town service vehicles have already obtained licenses to ferry passenger’s upcountry.
The Police in conjunction with NTSA have warned drivers to be careful on the roads and avoid accidents that lead to unnecessary deaths.
